Pelé, Ali, Bolt… without exception, the Brazilian footballer’s name is listed alongside the greatest of sporting heroes. He’s even lauded by his fellow sportspeople - Maradona, Platini, Mourinho and Ronaldo, to name a few. And with good reason too: Pelé still holds the Guinness World Record for the player with the most career goals (1281 goals in 1363 games) and a second for the most world cup medals.

Every sports fan is familiar with the career of this footballing great, from his early days as a 15 year old at Santos, his first Brazilian appearance at just 16, all the way to his later work as an ambassador for what he famously christened “The Beautiful Game”. But less well known is his philanthropic work - a reason that he is still in the spotlight today.

Pelé grew up in poverty, in a favela near Sao Paulo. Despite his success as a sports personality, this background has stayed close to Pelé’s heart over the years and led him to work with charities such as The ABC Trust (Action for Brazilian Children) which supports vulnerable young people in Brazil. He’s also worked with UNESCO and UNICEF, and campaigned to raise awareness and respond to the growing issue of hunger around the globe.

Last year, Pelé bid goodbye to his entire collection of football memorabilia, including his world cup medals and a replica of the Jules Rimet trophy. He is passionate about his sport, and inspiring other young people to follow in his footsteps. Many items went directly to his former club, Santos, to create an exhibition, and the rest were put up for auction. A large portion of these proceeds went to Pequeno Principe, Brazil’s largest paediatric hospital, which Pelé supports. He has been heavily involved in the research department to reduce childhood mortality since 2005.

Join us at Collectormania this June to meet and celebrate this footballing legend - a man who lives the values of sportsmanship, both off the pitch as well as on it.
